Summary

Tailors design, make or fit, alter, repair tailored, bespoke or hand-made garments from textile fabrics, light leather, fur and other material, or make hats or wigs for men. They produce made-to-measure wearing apparel according to customer's or garment manufacturer's specifications.

  • Selection of textile or leather pieces, adjusting the size, colour, composition and desired quality of the piece

  • Sewing and maintaining costumes used in theatre productions or television
  • Supervising other employees

Work condition

Tailors work in private factories or their own stores. Work is usually done in groups of two or more individuals. Work may be repeatable, but concentration should be kept maximally in order to avoid injuries. Tailors who work at their own stores do not have a specific schedule, sometime they work overtime so that customer requirements are met. Those working in factories usually work 40 hours a week.  

Work tools

Tailors use a large number of tools and machines that differ from their function. Most work is done with sewing and cutting machines. Hand tools such as knives, scissors, basting thread and needles, thimble, rules, tape measure, chalk etc.

Necessary education and training

The tailor's occupation taught in vocational secondary schools and through training by professionals in this field. Formal education in professional design schools and faculties can increase the quality of work as a tailor and prospect for employment.
