Summary

Metallurgists are scientists who specialize in the chemical and physical properties of metals and minerals and extract them from natural minerals.

Acitivities

  • Researching, developing, and controlling the process of extracting metals from their ores
  • Researching, developing, and controlling the process for casting, alloying, and heat treatment or welding of refined metals
  • Researching, developing, and controlling the production process of metal trading products
  • Consulting customers on the suitability of metals for various purposes
  • Carrying out laboratory analysis
  • Determining the location of coal, metal, and non-metallic minerals.

Knowledge and skills
required

  • Have knowledge of technical and engineering work
  • Be able to work in groups
  • Be able to identify, analyze, and solve problems
  • Be able to communicate verbally, in writing, and using graphs
  • Be able to adhere to strict security rules.

Work condition

Metallurgists can work in diverse industries such as civil engineering, aircraft manufacturing, automotive engineering, and the environmental protection industry. Metallurgists can work in chemical, physical and process metallurgy. They work in different environments, such as offices, laboratories, mines, and metal refineries. In some cases, metallurgists work in heights or in closed and dirty spaces. Their working hours are regular, but their workplace can be dangerous and therefore they must wear protective uniforms.

Work tools

Metallurgists use a range of specialized machinery and equipment to collect and analyze mineral and metal samples. They also use laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and measuring devices. Because they often use potentially dangerous ovens, chemicals and other equipment they should also wear appropriate safety gear.

Necessary education and training

To become a metallurgist, you must complete studies in the faculty of engineering science and specialize in extractive metallurgy, mineral science or chemical engineering.
