Customs inspectors fight the import of illegal goods, firearms, drugs or other dangerous or illegal items by checking the legality of things brought to the national borders. They are government officials who control the documents to ensure entry criteria and customs laws, as well as the payment of customs duties, are made.

Acitivities

  • Controlling cargoes, luggage, and other personal items entering or leaving a country
  • Examining immigration application, visa, and passport and interviewing people to determine the right to admission, stay, and travel in that country
  • Interpreting and explaining the law and regulations for travelers, migrants, carriers, and producers
  • Prohibiting people that are in violation of customs or immigration laws
  • Determining the duties and taxes that must be paid for the goods
  • Reporting activities related to their work such as finding, transactions, damages
  • Recording the findings, transactions, infringements etc.

Work condition

Customs inspectors work in border checkpoints, airports or seaports. At airports and border checkpoints they work at luggage delivery terminals or in the passenger registration department. At seaports they spend a considerable among of time inspecting ships and goods that come or leave the country. Working outdoors exposes them to different atmospheric conditions and temperatures. Most customs inspectors are standing and moving all day and their work environment can be loud and dirty. When weapons and narcotics are involved, inspectors may be at risk.

Work tools

Customs inspectors use equipment such as x-ray machines and scanners to control travelers and luggage. They can also be accompanied by dogs that are trained to find banned goods. Some inspectors may use firearms.

Necessary education and training

Customs inspectors should have a bachelor degree. Also, they should pass the fitness and medical test. They should not be under investigation and pass the acceptance test.
