Summary

Forensic investigators examine and analyze the materials and objects believed to be related to a crime. They follow crime scenes, gather evidence, draw sketches, and take notes.

Work condition

Forensic investigators usually work in offices and labs, but they also go out in the field to observe and collect data from a crime scene. They are often exposed to serious crime scenes, as well as firearms, explosives, or chemical hazards.

Work tools

Forensic investigators use specialized analytical scientific equipment, such as microscopes, drug discovery tools, UV lights, and fingerprinting tools. They use medical computer equipment to make analyses that reveal the molecular composition of sample materials. Usually, they wear gloves and protective uniforms.

Necessary education and training

Forensic investigators must complete a bachelor degree in forensic science as well as specialization in multidisciplinary departments including criminal justice, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Work experience is a criterion for advancement.
