Taxidermists process dead animals in such a way that they look alive, they are used for artistic purposes.

Acitivities

  • Meeting with clients to understand their needs and desires
  • Determining the position of the animal in which the customers want to have them (e.g., hanging on the wall, or on the ground)
  • Studying animals
  • Cleaning animals
  • Removing animal parts and dyeing their skin
  • Creating an artificial skull in case of need, armor and other artificial parts such as eyes, eyelashes, and teeth
  • Uniting all parts of the animal with armature (skins, skulls, animal wool, teeth etc.).
  • Building an animal handler.

Work condition

Taxidermists are mainly owners of their own shops, but they can also be hired at someone else’s shop. They can work as museum contractors. In some states, the occupation of the taxidermist is regulated by strict laws. Most of the animals that they work on are animals that have been found dead. This occupation requires great concentration and long periods of intensive work.

Work tools

Taxidermists use sealed bags to keep dead frozen animals up to the time of processing, scissors, scalpels, and other cutting instruments to remove the skin from the body. Taxidermists also work with chemical substances and should wear protective equipment.

Necessary education and training

The taxidermists occupation does not have any formal education requirement. Skills and techniques possessed for this occupation are critical for employment as well as knowledge in the field of biology and art. Taxidermists must possess a license to practice this occupation and keep animals.
